Weirton Medical Center is laying off workers this month in an effort to save the hospital $2 million a year.
The hospital’s cutting 36 full-time equivalent positions. The layoffs affect union, non-union and management jobs at the hospital, including nurses and LPNs. Some workers were laid offf Tuesday, but union employees have until the end of the month before their jobs are eliminated.
The job cuts are the result of a five-month review of the hospital’s operations.
Hospital Communications Director Kevin Brown says all departments were evaluated and compared to operations at 400 similar hospitals across the country.
Brown says the recession did not cause the layoffs, but the savings will help the hospital since its investments have lost value.
Weirton Medical Center is a private, non-profit corporation.
