A new poll shows that one in five West Virginia voters believe Barack Obama is a Muslim.

And only half of voters in West Virginia say Obama is a Christian – despite a campaign by Obama and his supporters to shoot down the false rumor that he is Muslim.

The poll of 600 likely voters was conducted by Orion Strategies for West Virginia Media and West Virginia Wesleyan College. It shows McCain 11 points ahead of Obama in West Virginia – 52 percent McCain; 41 percent Obama.

Only half – 51% – said Obama was a Christian; 21% said he was a Muslim;18% said his religion was “other,” 7% were not sure; 2.5% said he was an atheist and less than 1% said he was Jewish.

Only 2% of Obama supporters thought he was a Muslim, but more than 30% of McCain supporters thought he was a Muslim.

Nearly half the respondents said Obama was not a Christian – and one in five voters said that he was a Muslim – a false rumor that has plagued Obama in West Virginia since the primary.

Rob Rupp, professor at West Virginia Wesleyan and one of the authors of the poll, said even he was shocked at these results.
