October 30, 2012 · Counties in higher elevations have been hit with upwards of a foot of snow and it was still coming down Monday afternoon in many places. Upshur County Emergency officials described what their main concerns are as fresh snow falls.

Upshur County Public Information Officer James Farrell said many roads in his county are blocked by fallen trees. Branches and wires were still falling and Farrell stressed to stay off the roads. The Department of Highways was working to begin to clear roads in the county and Farrell said to give them time before heading out.

As of Tuesday morning, there were warming shelters open at both Ellamore and Banks District Fire Departments and the Red Cross was working to open a shelter today at the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Buckhannon.

“We’re working on shelter’s because we believe the power is going to be out for awhile," Farrell said. "We’ll be having a command staff meeting later today to list all of our problems, but right now we’re working on getting shelters operational and making sure that we keep emergency communications up and running.”

There were more than 7,000 customers without power in Upshur County as of Tuesday morning. Again, Farrell reminds drivers to please stay off the roads.

In Scott McClanahan’s 'Crapalachia,' the Greenbrier County native weaves together a narrative of dysfunction and eccentricity about his upbringing in southern West Virginia. Brilliantly funny and strikingly sincere, McClanahan’s “biography of place” carefully blurs the line between fact and memory.
