October 2, 2012 · Marshall University is receiving about $250,000 for its diabetes program.

The money will go to Marshall's Appalachian Diabetes Control Translation Project. It provides diabetes education, prevention and monitoring.

Senators Jay Rockefeller, Joe Manchin and Congressman Nick Rahall announced the grant in a joint news release.

Rockefeller calls diabetes a national epidemic that is particularly serious in West Virginia. He says more than one in 10 adults in the state have diabetes and he has introduced a bill so Medicare can cover the National Diabetes Prevention Program.

The money for the grant comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission.
