Slain state trooper honored

September 6, 2012 · At Trooper Eric Workman's funeral yesterday it was said many times that law enforcement is a calling. It was said on Sunday as well when Corporal Marshall Bailey was memorialized.

 

Hundreds of mourners were there as well as law enforcement officers from as far away as California and Alaska who just stayed here to attend both funerals. Eric Workman grew up in Clay County, was a star baseball player for West Virginia State and an avid outdoorsman.

Cal Bailey, baseball coach, West Virginia State University
Christopher Cole, friend of Eric Workman
Pastor Mike Long
Cpl. Jim Mitchell, Chaplain, West Virginia State Police

Corporal Jim Mitchell, the chaplain of the West Virginia State Police said Workman was an organ donor and 50 people received a gift of life. He was 26 and had been on the state police force about a year and a half.

He’s leading a memorial march into battle, along steep mountain trails and a federal highway.

The state House of Delegates has officially elected a new leader to take former Speaker Rick Thompson’s position. Delegate Tim Miley of Harrison County was elected by members of the House during a special session yesterday, but it still remains to be seen if some committee chairs will hold their positions under the new leadership.

Public hearings across southern West Virginia are allowing community members to voice their concerns on a proposed rate hike. West Virginia American Water proposed the 20 percent increase last year which could affect hundreds of thousands of West Virginians.

As folks across the state prepare to celebrate the state’s 150th birthday, a West Virginia based theater company is wrapping up rehearsal’s for their original musical commemorating the long history of the state. The Vintage Theater Company based in Clarksburg will present “The Golden Horseshoe” this week.
