August 9, 2012 · West Virginia State University is the first university to establish laboratory space in the research technology park in South Charleston.

The series of buildings containing lab space for the former Union Carbide and Dow Chemical was taken over by the state two years ago. It's now operated by the Higher Education Policy Commission.

While the Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College will begin offering classes at the Tech Park this fall, West Virginia State is the first university to have an on-site presence.

And that's great news for Dr. Barbara Liedl. A research scientist, Dr. Liedl has been working on better ways to grow tomatoes.  She recently led us on a tour of her new lab and points out her favorite pieces of equipment in it.
