Southern Legislative Conference comes to Charleston

July 26, 2012 · The 66th annual meeting of the Southern Legislative Conference convenes Saturday in Charleston.

Lawmakers from 15 states will attend programs and seminars relating to economic development, education, finances and energy policy.  They will also be shown both underground and surface coal mines, take tours of historic Hatfield and McCoy sites, and be entertained by award winning crooner Landau Eugene Murphy.  West Virginia natives Jennifer Garner and Homer Hickam will speak.

 

Attendees will also perform public service by helping assemble 20 thosuand meals to be distributed to the Mountaineer and Huntington area food banks.

 

House Speaker Rick Thompson is chairman of the Southern Legislative Conference and will preside over the four day meeting.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today announced the appointment of Speaker Rick Thompson as Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Veterans Assistance. The appointment will be effective following the retirement of Secretary Keith Gwinn.

During that story, Executive Director Steve Kominar accused the US Environmental Protection Agency of doing everything it can to prevent Consol Energy from getting a permit for a mining site in the county.
