July 24, 2012 · Outdoor gear retailer Cabela’s will open its new Charleston store on August 9. The store is stocked and ready to open in the Southridge Shopping Center off Corridor G.

It’s the second one in West Virginia for the outfitter.  A store opened in Wheeling eight years ago.

This store is smaller than that one but still contains the retailer’s trademark outdoor products - fishing and camping gear, clothing, guns, bows and arrows.

Spokesman Wes Remmer says southern West Virginia is a perfect spot for this store.

“We look for places across the country where we know we have we proven customer base,” Remmer explains.

“We’re able to track our customers through catalog sales and the Internet. And we want to build in hot spots and Charleston fit the bill. Beyond that there are a ton of outdoor opportunities right here in Charleston and around the area. We’ve had tremendous success with the Wheeling store. We love West Virginia.”

There’s the mountain of stuffed animals in the center of the store and all around the walls - 243 of them. It employs 175 people full time.
