July 18, 2012 · Macy’s is celebrating the opening of its new catalog distribution warehouse in Berkeley County today.

Macy’s built the fulfillment center near Martinsburg to fill online orders for both Macy’s and its sister store Bloomingdale’s.

The 1.3 million square foot facility will eventually employ an estimated 1,200 full time and 700 seasonal workers when it’s fully operational.

Stephen Christian, Berkeley County Development Authority executive director, estimates the facility’s $30 million payroll will provide a significant economic boost to the community.

Christian said since Macy’s announced its decision to locate in Berkeley County other major companies have inquired about the area.

Macy’s broke ground on the more than $150 million center in April 2011. It was completed in about a year.

The company began filling orders last month and is taking applications for a variety of jobs listed on its website.
