May 2, 2012 · Two local documentary filmmakers have a won a national award for their most recent work.

The Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaking team of John Witek and Deb Novak from Huntington were honored recently in Houston.

Their latest work, “Steven Caras: See Them Dance,” took home the Grand Remi Award “Best of Show” at the 45th Annual Worldfest-Houston International Film Festival. Deb Novak said it’s a great honor to receive such an esteemed award.

“It really is important to give the entire team a pat on the back for what they’ve done and that’s one of the great things, I like the fact that my editor and my camera people and my special effects and my composer and all of these people are honored along with us for this, that’s very important I think,” Novak said.

The documentary which was presented on Arizona PBS is the story of Mr. Caras, a former New York City Ballet dancer, who was forced to change his career and became one of the world’s most famous dance photographers.

“We are hoping that stations all across the United States will pick this show up and show it because I think it speaks not just to the dance world, but it speaks to people who have been down and who have come back, who have lost their job and reinvented themselves and that’s what this show is about,” Novak said.

In its 45th year, Worldfest-Houston is one of the oldest international film festivals in existence.
