Massey Energy Company announced this week that it has followed through on a promise to help pay for a new school in Raleigh County.
The coal company has donated $1.5 million to help replace the existing Marsh Fork Elementary.
The existing school is 70 years old and has been at the
center of concerns over potential safety and health hazards since a Massey coal
preparation plant and impoundment are nearby.
The new school will be located three miles from the existing
school.
Massey Energy Chief Executive Officer and President Baxter
Phillips and Chief Operating Officer Chris Adkins attended yesterday’s Board of
Education meeting in Beckley to
present the check to Raleigh County and
state officials.
Marsh Fork Elementary
School administrators and teachers
were also on hand for the check presentation.
The new school is expected to open next year.
