September 30, 2010 · A major industry group has endorsed the Democratic candidate for West Virginia’s special election to replace the late Sen. Robert Byrd.

The West Virginia Coal Association represents 90 percent of the state’s coal producers.

Citing his record as Governor and his ability to work across party lines, the industry group endorsed Democrat Joe Manchin, saying he will be the “independent voice” West Virginia needs in the Senate.

Coal association chairman Gary White says the group is backing Manchin largely for his opposition to the President and the EPA on issues affecting the coal industry.

“Just the fact that he’s a Democrat doesn’t mean that he’s going to be with the Democratic administration or the Democratic leadership in the Senate and the Congress on every issue.”

Despite claims from Republican opponent John Raese, Manchin has reiterated his opposition to federal cap and trade legislation to regulate greenhouse gases.

In addition to the West Virginia Coal Association, Manchin has been endorsed by the state and U.S. Chambers of Commerce and the National Rifle Association.
