WV back in court over election ad rules

Just weeks before the 2010 general election, West Virginia is again under fire for attempting to regulate certain kinds of political ads.
State election officials
have until Friday to respond to a legal challenge of disclosure rules enacted
by the state so voters can know who is funding the ads they see and hear. This suit was filed by a national
conservative group and West Virginians for
Life.
The rules under challenge
include one for ads that appear to appeal for votes for or against specific
candidates. The other is for ads appearing right before an election.
This latest lawsuit argues
the rules are too vague and stifle political speech.
The Legislature made a
third attempt at such regulations this year after federal judges twice ruled
against them.
