July 28, 2010 · Another West Virginia city is considering creating a user tax on people who work within city limits.

Fairmont's City Manager Jay Rogers presented the idea to a council working group Tuesday.

The $2 user tax would apply to people who work in the city of Fairmont.

The money raised from the tax would help fund highway projects. It's estimated that 60 percent of the city's streets need work.

One councilman suggested that the city impose an additional 75 cents to the fee to help maintain the city's parks.

Huntington's City Council is scheduled to vote on imposing a one percent sales tax and a one percent tax on people who work within city limits at its meeting in August.

Huntington Council members may at the same time decide to reduce business taxes and repeal the city's current weekly $3 user tax.
