A United Airlines jet headed to California made an emergency landing in Charleston this morning.
The Boeing 757 landed at Yeager Airport shortly after 9:00 a.m. Brian Belcher, Marketing Director at the Charleston airport,
says such emergency landings are fairly routine due to the location of the
airport on a path from the East Coast.
He says a diversion of this type is a decision made by the flight crew: "They always take that seriously when there's smoke in the aircraft." Belcher says, in such situations, crews will divert to the nearest airport capable of handling
the aircraft.
No injuries were reported among the 178 passengers or crew members.
A United spokeswoman says Flight 229 was flying from Washington’s Dulles International
to San Diego.
United Airlines sent a replacement aircraft this afternoon so passengers
could continue their trip to the West.
