July 27, 2010 · Three members of West Virginia’s congressional delegation have introduced legislation designed to protect the pensions of thousands of American mine workers.

Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Carte Goodwin introduced the Coal Accountability and Retired Employee Act of 2010.

The act would transfer excess money from the Abandoned Mine Reclamation Fund to the United Mine Workers of America’s pension fund.

In a statement, Senator Goodwin says the legislation will give coal miners peace of mind.

Rep. Nick Rahall introduced companion legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
