April 30, 2010 · Funding has been secured that will allow the construction of a new school in Raleigh County to replace Marsh Fork Elementary.

The Governor, legislators and representatives of the School Building Authority announced today that the Annenberg Foundation is giving 2.5 million dollars for the project.  With funds from the SBA, the Raleigh County Board of Education and Massey Energy, the project can now move forward.

Charles “Charlie” Annenberg Weingarten, trustee with the foundation, has been in Raleigh County for the past two weeks and was personally moved to make the donation.

"All the pieces made sense.  The school should be moved. It was kind of basic. It was a great gift to the community, to what the people of the community have endured on all sides of the fence.  And, what a great way to plant some seeds for the future.”

Marsh Fork has been at the center of a debate over safety issues since the school is near a Massey Energy coal preparation plant and coal slurry empoundment.
