Rockefeller takes on credit card companies in roundtable discussion
March 9, 2010 ·
The senator spoke to a roundtable of participants at the Morgantown airport Monday afternoon.
The Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and
Disclosure Act is designed to limit the influence credit card companies have in
raising interest rates and taking advantage of consumers in debt.
Nicole LaPresta is a West Virginia
University law student.
She says she was one of those customers.
“I was ten thousand dollars in debt, not to mention my
school loans as well,” she said.
“I quit school, and it took me about four years to pay it
all off.”
LaPresta was part of a roundtable discussion held in Morgantown
Monday about the new credit card law.
U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller hosted the event as a way to
spread the word about the new law and what it means for consumers.
But Rockefeller says more work needs to be done on the
issue.
“Partly, what you take back is emotional anger,” he said.
“You just don’t quit, you grab hold of an issue like this
and you just don’t quit till you’ve got it solved, because you’re helping
people.”
Rockefeller says some of that work includes making sure
interest rates and minimum payments are reasonable, and protecting a citizen’s
right to sue the credit card company for unfair practices.
It was his second roundtable discussion in as many days in
north central West Virginia.
