Preston County struggles to make up extensive snow days

By Ben Adducchio

February 22, 2010 · Preston County students have been in classes only one day during the last two weeks.

Preston County Schools Superintendent Larry Parsons says he has lost track of how many snow days the county has taken, and the brutal winter has been especially harsh on Preston County.

“I can’t get the buses down the secondary roads, they are down to one lane. No turnaround opportunity, no backup opportunity, if you miss someone,” he said.

“No place where you can turn the bus around. We’ve had seven feet of snow in some parts of the county.”

Parsons admits he’s very frustrated by the situation.

The county has rescheduled five snow days in April and June, but Parsons knows it’s impossible to make up all the missed time.

“It’s all been a problem,” he said, “it’s going to be difficult for the instructors to get the time in with them so that they can complete their tests successfully.”

Parsons says he is confident schools will be open on Tuesday in Preston County, unless the weather changes drastically.
