November 17, 2009 · Gov. Joe Manchin appointed Charleston attorney Thomas Flaherty as the newest member of the West Virginia University Board of Governors.

Flaherty is currently the chairman of Brickstreet Mutual Insurance Co.

He previously served as president of the West Virginia State Bar Association. He is this year’s recipient of the statewide “Lawyer of the Year” award.

Flaherty’s appointment drew praise from WVU officials.

“He is a very bright and dedicated guy-a great choice,” WVU President James Clements said in a statement. “I welcome his involvement on the Board during this very important time of setting a shared vision for the University.”

WVU Board of Governor’s Chair Carolyn Long also applauded the choice.

Tom Flaherty is an outstanding attorney and community servant, and someone who has made this state and University proud,” Long said in a statement.

Flaherty replaces Steve Goodwin, who resigned last month. He will serve the remainder of Goodwin’s four-year term, which ends in a year.

Flaherty received his bachelor’s and law degrees from WVU.
