September 10, 2009 · In this special documentary, discover the origins of Harpers Ferry, the Civil War, and the legend of John Brown.

This special “Outlook” explores how a ferry landing became a gritty industrial town and home to the United States arsenal.

The Harpers Ferry arsenal drew John Brown, the abolitionist whose raid in 1859 failed to ignite a slave revolt – but helped spark the Civil War.

This is one of two West Virginia PBS documentaries produced about the state’s national parks, including Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, in conjunction with the Ken Burns’ documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.”

You can also watch this on Outlook, Thursday Sept. 10 at 9 p.m. and Sunday Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. on West Virginia PBS.
