August 6, 2009 · West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller says Democrats need to do whatever it takes to pass health care reform this year.

Three senate Republicans are trying to work out a compromise health care bill, but Rockefeller predicts they will all vote against the legislation.

The senator says leaders should give up trying for a bi-partisan bill. He says instead of getting the filibuster proof sixty votes, Democrats should just use a special budget rule and pass the bill with a simple majority of fifty one.

Rockefeller also says the GOP compromise is weak, because it doesn’t include a public option. He says he’s disgusted with the lack of GOP support.

"It’s a shame to me on that something so mammoth as this which affects West Virginians so utterly profoundly. People there that have been struggling all their lives and always seem to get the short end of the stick, that they have to put up with a tactic like this. They look at us in Congress and say what are you people doing? How is my life any better."

Democratic lawmakers have been hit with a wave of organized protests as they try to explain the reforms back in their districts.

Democratic leaders think the protests will back fire. They plan to have a bill ready in September.
