West Virginia Public Radio launches an on-going and in-depth focus on revitalization efforts in McDowell County. Located in the heart of southern West Virginia’s coal country, McDowell is among the most disadvantaged areas in the nation.

The number of coal jobs has plummeted over the years. Poverty is pervasive, unemployment is rampant, health problems are significant and drug abuse is widespread. The failing public school system has been under state control for more than a decade.

But multiple efforts, both public and private, are underway to turn things around in this community.

Senior Public Affairs Producer Suzanne Higgins and Southern West Virginia Bureau Chief Jessica Lilly are speaking with residents about the challenges they face and the changes they believe need to be made. The team is covering the progress and the people working to revitalize McDowell County.
