Mining permits

Mountaintop removal permits will no longer be evaluated under an expedited process. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced yesterday it is suspending the use of Nationwide Permit 21 in West Virginia and five other Appalachian states.

In Pennsylvania, just north of Morgantown, West Virginia, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is using a former limestone mine to conduct research on methods to improve coal mine safety. The newest project is designed to learn more about mine seals to help prevent explosions.

People in parts of Southern West Virginia are still cleaning up after flood waters swept through communities almost one week ago. Victims in one McDowell County town are blaming recent logging and mining activity along with Mother Nature.

West Virginia is one of at least 25 states and the federal government investigating complaints that CVS/ Caremark is treating other pharmacies unfairly. The issue has been escalating for about three years since the drug store giant CVS bought Caremark, the insurance benefits manager.

FestivALL begins in Charleston, West Virginia this weekend. It's when the city becomes a work of art. One of the events is the annual Smoke on the Water Chili Cook Off. Jim Kerrigan of Dunbar has been entering chili competitions for eight years. He allowed us into his kitchen to watch him work.
