Shelby Lynne made her second appearance on this show, recorded in November of 2008. She did a few numbers from her most widely recognized albums, including her latest, a tribute to the blue-eyed soul of Dusty Springfield.

James McMurtry, never at a loss for words, has followed up "Childish Things" (which spawned the hit song "We Can't Make It Here Anymore") with "Just Us Kids," another heartland rocker with threads of America woven deep into its core.

James plays three songs from "Just Us Kids," as well as the title track to "Childish Things." (Featured over at Song of the Week) The players you see above, Ronnie Johnson on bass and Tim Holt on guitar (Daren Hess on drums, not pictured) have been with McMurtry for many years, a sign of a good band-leader.

Pretty much no denying this gentleman was the biggest JM fan in the house that night. At least he had the most evidence of such.

Jim Bianco, originally from Brooklyn, educated in Boston and now living out west, kicked the show off with songs from his latest, "Sing!" The Mountain Stage band backed Bianco during his set, and our own vocalists Julie Adams and Laurel Dennie joined in on harmony vocals. If you like a good story, don't miss Bianco's set.
DocLee-Steel
Brian Blauser
The Lee Boys, like the Campbell Brothers and Robert Randolph, have been taking the authentic sacred steel music from the church to the streets for many years now. Above is Roosevelt “The Doctor” Collier, nephew of Alvin Lee, the leader of the group. Something about that singin' steel that makes the soul shake!
Snodderly-Holcombe2008
Brian Blauser
Speaking of authentic, it doesn't get any realer than Malcom Holcombe. This North Carolina boy has sandpaper in his voice and a heart as big as the mountains. He's joined by Ed Snodderly, who was just featured in our re-broadcast from Bristol a couple weeks ago. If you haven't heard Ed do "Workin' in the New Mine," (featuring Ronnie McCoury) yet, please do yourself the favor and go hear it HERE.

You can hear more of Malcolm's album "Gamblin' House," on his Web site.

Piano great Chuck Leavell

I saw this guy jogging down the street on my way to Mountain Stage.

You would never know that he played on the quintessential recordings by the Allman Brothers Band, has been leading the touring band of the Rolling Stones for 25 years and is the go-to piano player for many greats-Eric Clapton, The Black Crowes to name a couple-had his own success in Sea Level and went on to write three well received books on conservation.

I could go on, but there's plenty more on just who and what Chuck Leavell has done in his BIO

What he's done for us is record a killer live set with the Mountain Stage band, featuring tunes from all periods of his career, including some from his latest double-live album, Live in Germany.

This and much more for your listening pleasure at NPR.org/MountainStage.

As if you needed any more reason to be jazzed about summer's arrival, we're thrilled to announce the addition of two June shows to our upcoming LIVE SCHEDULE.

ChuckMathenaCenter
Chuck Mathena Center-Princeton, WV

June 7, 2009- We're happy to be a part of the inaugural concert season for the brand-new Chuck Mathena Center in Princeton, WV. It's a wonderful new performing arts theater and gallery just a short jaunt off Interstate-77.

DoyleLawson-Quicksilver
Doyle Lawson and the latest version of Quicksilver

We're glad to welcome for the 4th time to the Mountain Stage, a true living legend of bluegrass music, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver . Lawson came up playing mandolin with the likes of JD Crowe and the Country Gentleman, perfecting his trademark baritone vocal.

Just like those legendary outfits, his band Quicksilver has become an institution of it's own, churning out top-tier musicians and singers while keeping that Quicksilver sound.

Lovell-b&w
The Lovell Sisters

Also joining us will be renowned harmony-loving trio, the Lovell Sisters, Jessica, Megan, and Rebecca. They've all had some classical training, which we all know is a great starter for the world of acoustic folk and bluegrass music. These girls will be charming audiences for some time to come.

Tickets for June 7 go on sale May 4, and will be available on the Chuck Mathena Website or by calling 877.425.5128

FestivALL2009

Charleston has been getting geared up for this year's FestivALL, our multi-faceted, city-wide arts & entertainment festival scheduled for June 19-26, 2009.

Mountain Stage has typically closed FestivALL on the final Sunday. This year we're going to kick the whole thing off on Friday, June 19 with a very special show at The Clay Center featuring two of the biggest names in the blues.

BGuy-2009

If you name a major guitar player in any genre, chances are they've been influenced by the legendary Buddy Guy. From Hendrix and Clapton to Knopfler and Beck, they've all drawn upon this Chicago legend for inspiration.

The Blues proprietor and restaurateur will make his third appearance on Mountain Stage Friday, June 19. Keep reading for ticket info.

ShemekiaCopeland-2009

Making a third appearance on Mountain Stage, and a second during FestivALL, will be the new blues queen Shemekia Copeland.

An amazing singer with loads of talent that stretches far beyond the boundaries of the blues, Shemekia is a wonderful entertainer who has certainly hit her stride.

Her latest record, "Never Going Back," not only solidifies her as a bright star but proves she'll be shining well into the future. Dig some of the album HERE.

Tickets for June 19 go on sale next Tuesday, March 31 at TheClayCenter.org or by phone at 304.561.3570 and a limited number will be available in town, at Taylor Books, 226 Capitol Street, Charleston.

The time for summer planning is upon us! We hope you can join us in June, if not before.

There's a bunch of hub-bub happening all over NPR Music regarding South By South West (or SXSW) in Austin. It's basically the only thing they are featuring (those four letters appear 11 times on the NPR Music page alone).

Concerts with a bunch of line-checking, tuning and feedback are being posted in their entirety.

Luckily over at Mountain Stage, you can hear a fantastic set by bluegrass pioneer and perennial touring machine Del McCoury and his band- sans soundcheck! No credentials needed.

Del's spirit abides over every Mountain Stage in the form of his bobble-head (above).

This weekend's edition of Mountain Stage is a re-broadcast of a show recorded in the beautiful TN/VA border city of Bristol. Historic home of the first successful recordings of the Carter FamilyJimmy Rodgers and many more.

To celebrate the 81st anniversary of those recordings, Mountain Stage welecomed Carlene Carter, the Del McCoury Band, Mike Farris, Eric Church and Ed Snodderly to the program.

BristolParamount-2008
Brian Blauser
The historic Paramount Center for the Arts is just up the street from the site where those historic recordings, known as "The Bristol Sessions," took place in 1927. The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance welcomed Mountain Stage back to Bristol for the fourth time in three years to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the "Big Bang" of Country Music.

Brian Blauser
Our photographer Brian Blauser happened to be sitting across the table from Assistant Producer Adam Harris when he got a call from Rob McCoury, of the Del McCoury Band, notifying us that the band's bus had broken down just outside of nearby Blountville, TN.

BCMA founder and WV native Fred McClellan hopped in a van to pick up the band, while some McCoury family showed up and helped transfer equipment to the Paramount in their pick-up truck.

When the band arrived, the patriarch of the family, Mr. Del McCoury, told a story about a fan that saw the band by the road-side. This fan stopped to tell them he had just learned the introduction do Del's hit song "Vincent Black Lightning" on the banjo that day.

"Well, you're havin' a better day than we are," Del laughed.

Del is definately a favorite guest among our crew. Above you'll see our stage-hand extraordinaire Joey Ansel posing with our Del McCoury bobble-head in it's shiney new road case, autographed by the real McCoury. The bobble-head, and the spirit of Del, goes everywhere Mountain Stage goes.

Country star Eric Church told us he heard about Mountain Stage from his friend Dierks Bentley. Church was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his new CD, Carolina, which we now know will hit stores March 24. Church donned his new Mountain Stage t-shirt for the finale song.
Farris-McCrarySisters

Mike Farris, along with the McCrary Sisters (kin of the legendary Fairfield Four).

Since his breakout CD "Salvation in Lights" Farris has done a live-record "Shout!Live" recorded at Nashville's Station Inn. It will be available April 14.

Fred McClellan
Brian Blauser
WV Native and founder of the BCMA Fred McClellan introduced Mountain Stage to the hometown crowd, who have always welcomed Mountain Stage as a member of their vast family.
DaleJett-CarleneCarter

Speaking of family, here is a rarity: Two heirs to the Carter Family name, cousins Dale Jett and Carlene Carter, together on stage, singing the finale song "Keep on the Sunny Side," made famous by A.P., Sara and Maybelle, the Carter Family.

Dale is the son of Janette Carter, grandson of Sara and A.P. Carlene is the daughter of June Carter Cash, grandaughter of Maybelle Carter.

Carlene-Piano
Brian Blauser

Carlene performed the title track to her new record, "Stronger," by herself at the piano. Her performance was emotional, as you can hear in her version of "Me and the Wildwood Rose," featured last week as our Mountain Stage Song of the Week.

It was and is an honor to be associated with such a historic city with a rich tradition in country music. We hope to return to Bristol very soon.

Individual sets from this episode of Mountain Stage go up starting today over at NPR Music. Let us know what you think!

anaegge-2009

The line-up for March 29 at WVU's Creative Arts Center has been finalized with the addition of singer-songwriter Ana Egge. She has a 17 year career with six albums and Lucinda Williams apparently called her the "folk Nina Simone." Read more for yourself in her BIO and visit her MySpace for listening samples.

You can read more about each guest on our press release, then head over to TicketMaster for your tickets.

DeepVibrations-2009
We've added two more names to the line-up for April 5. Joining The GourdsTom Rush and Backyard Tire Fire is Nashville based grit-rockers The Deep Vibration. Visit their MySpace, sit back and let the sounds carry you. Then get the tickets.
SusanWerner-2009

Update: Returning to Mountain Stage for the 7th time April 5 will be mid-western songwriter Susan Werner supporting her new album of revisioned pop tunes, "Classics." (Click for some audio samples)

After combining doubt and faith for 2007's agnostic gospel effort "The Gospel Truth," Werner has melded classical music and new classics in the modern pop realm. Co-arranged by Werner and Boston Pops arranger and pianist Brad Hatfield, she has re-arranged ten tunes by the likes of Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens and Paul McCartney, shining a new light on some popular new-standards. (I can hardly wait to hear her re-imaging of "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" by the Beach Boys)

She also released a live-album, "Live at Passim" that plays like a sort of Greatest Hits with a crowd.

Yarn-2009

Roots group Yarn, whose record "Empty Pockets" has been makin' waves in the Americana radio circuit, has rescheduled its Mountain Stage appearance for May 10 here in Charleston. Tickets for that show, also featuring Martin Sexton and Ruthie Foster, are on sale online NOW, at Taylor Books and by calling 1800.594.TIXX.

Yarn is fairly unique with their instrumentation boasting harmonica, electric mandolin, upright bass, drums and .....tenor sax. Give it a listen. It works.

You access a bunch of live shows here, where they've been posting bootlegs via archive.org.

Be sure to check out our entire Live Show Schedule, tell a friend and come see us in Charleston.

Here are some photos from this weekend's radio broadcast to help you visualize while you listen. Here's the playlist.

This show was recorded August 10, 2008 at the Cultural Center Theater in Charleston, WV and features Carrie RodriguezVienna TengThe RescuesCrooked Still and Mike Gordon

Aoife-Carrie
Brian Blauser

It's always nice when our guest artists are friends and are familiar with one-another's music. So we welcome the chance to get completely unique performances on the show, like when Crooked Still's Aoife (pronouned "EEF-a") O'Donovan joined Carrie Rodriguez for a rendition of "Absence" from Carrie's CD "She Ain't Me." The title track is our Song of the Week, preview it here

FinaleRehearse8-10-09-1
Brian Blauser

Before we open the doors to the audience, host Larry Groce invites all who care to participate to the stage to rehearse the show's finale song. This is usually the only time the artist gets any practice with the song but often times the song is standard knowledge for most of the guests.

For this show, Groce chose Bob Dylan's "Everything is Broken."

Sample Lyric:
Broken hands on broken ploughs,
Broken treaties, broken vows,
Broken pipes, broken tools,
People bending broken rules.
Hound dog howling, bull frog croaking,
Everything is broken.

FinaleRehearse-Teng-Gordon
Brian Blauser

Alex Wong (Left) and Vienna Teng study the finale lyrics while Mike Gordon plays along. This night was a rare occurance in that our bass player, Steve Hill, got to watch the finale song as Mr. Gordon handled bass duties.

Teng-Wong
Brian Blauser

Vienna Teng previewed music from her upcoming CD "Inland Territories," though at the time she wasn't even sure what the record would be called. Now we know that the CD comes out April 7 and judging by this preview video it has some pretty elaborate orchestration by the profoundly artistic Teng and her producer, Alex Wong (right). Wong joined Teng on this set, playing some sparse percussion which made for unique interpretations of "Inland Territories" lush pop orchestration. Teng emerged from behind the piano to sing a barn-burning stomp-blues "Grandmother Song." Can't wait to hear the album version.

TheRescuesLive2008
Brian Blauser

Not only do The Rescues (Left to Right: Adrianne, Gabriel Mann, Kyler England) boast rich harmony for days, but they are all great people to be around. Visiting us from Los Angeles (Adrianne now lives in Atlanta), there were a few noticable cultural differences between the Californians and the locals here in Charleston. Listen during their set for their story about stopping by the Charleston Town Center Mall before the show.

Carrie-CrookedStill2008
From Left: Tristan Claridge, Brittany Haas, Rodriguez, Corey DiMario, O'Donovan and Gregory Lizst.

Carrie Rodriguez returned the favor and joined Crooked Still on stage during their portion of the show as well. Carrie sings beautifully on the Crooked Still adaptation of "Captain, Captain." This shot was taken from behind the console of Jim Raines, our Front of House Engineer.

Just when you think you've heard it all from Mike Gordon, he's always got something else up his sleeve. This time it was a great band and new music from his latest solo CD, The Green Sparrow.

Finale-9-10-08
Brian Blauser

This was one occasion where every guest artist took Larry up on his offer to join-in on the finale song.

From Left to Right: Dr. Greg Lizst on Banjo, Hans Holzen on electric guitar, O'Donovan, Rodriguez, Wong, Teng, England, Adrianne, Mann, Larry Groce and Julie Adams. The fiddle of Crooked Still's Brittany Haas can be seen at the far left. Gordon's guitarist Scott Murawski is behind O'Donovan.

Enjoy the show and look for the individual sets on NPR Music starting Monday so you can hear your favorite parts again and again.

We've just confirmed two more live recordings for May 2009. Tickets will be on sale soon at Music Today and at Taylor Books in downtown Charleston. You can also call 1800.594.TIXX. Stay tuned to the blog and our live schedule as we add more guest artists in the coming weeks.

PatMcGee1

We return to our home at the Cultural Center Theater on May 3 to welcome melodic rocker Pat McGee. His latest CD "These Days(The Virgin Sessioins)" is due out March 10. The leader of the Pat McGee Band has been mixing things up as of late. Performing in various forms- solo, trio, full band- he released "Live from the Southland" on I-tunes in January and is already working on new music to follow "These Days." Word on the web-site is that he's collaborating with Emerson Hart (Tonic), Stephen Kellogg (Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers) and Ryan Newell (Sister Hazel).

TimEaston-2009

Also joining us May 3 is Tim Easton. On his fifth album for New West Records, "Porcupine," due out April 28th, the Joshua Tree, CA resident returns to his jagged, mid-western electrified roots sound. You can read more about this friend of Lucinda Williams and the making of Porcupine HERE.

MartinSexton2009
Martin Sexton will be making his third appearance on the show May 10, also here at the Cultural Center. Martin's new album "SOLO" is out now with a live performance DVD. You can hear it some samples through the "solo player."
RuthieFoster-2009

Making her sophomore appearance on Mountain Stage May 10 is Ruthie Foster. She joined us back in November of 2007 in Morgantown while she was still garnering praise for her breakthrough CD "The Phenominal Ruthie Foster." (You can hear that show in our ARCHIVES) Now she's back with "The Truth According to Ruthie Foster " and she'll be bringing a band with her. If you are yet to hear this powerful vocalist you're shorting yourself.

John Cephas- on Mountain Stage, December 2002

All of us here at Mountain Stage are deeply saddened by the news of John Cephas' passing. He was half of the renowned blues duo Cephas & Wiggins, who made six appearances on Mountain Stage since 1988.

Our thoughts are with the family and many friends of Mr. Cephas.

UPDATE: NPR Music has posted a Mountain Stage tribute to Mr. Cephas featuring a Cephas & Wiggins set from 1989. Click HERE to listen and read Larry Groce's remembrance of "Bowling Green" John Cephas.

The following is from Alligator records:

PIEDMONT BLUES GUITARIST AND VOCALIST JOHN CEPHAS, 1930 - 2009

Master blues guitarist and vocalist John Cephas died of natural causes on Wednesday, March 4, 2009. He was 78. Well known as one half of the award-winning Piedmont blues duo Cephas & Wiggins, John’s remarkable and delicate finger picking and rich, baritone vocals placed him firmly at the forefront of acoustic blues artists. John received a National Heritage Fellowship Award (often called the “Living Treasure Award”) in 1989. This is the highest honor the U.S. Government offers a traditional artist. Two weeks ago, John was honored as one of eight black trailblazers as designated by the Library of Virginia's African American History Month.

John Cephas, along with his harmonica playing partner Phil Wiggins, performed thousands of concerts and festivals all over the world. Often under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, the two spent much of the 1980s abroad, playing Europe, Africa, Central and South America, China, Australia and New Zealand. In 1988, they were among the first Americans to perform at the Russian Folk Festival in Moscow. In 1997 Cephas & Wiggins performed for President Bill Clinton. In addition, John appeared on stage portraying a blind bluesman in the Kennedy Center production of Blind Man Blues. He also appeared in a production of Zora Neal Hurston’s play, Polk County, in Washington, D.C.

Among his many endeavors, John served on the Executive Committee of the National Council for the Traditional Arts, and has testified before Congressional committees. He is also a founder of the Washington, D.C. Blues Society. “More than anything else,” said John, “I would like to see a revival of country blues by more young people…more people going to concerts, learning to play the music. That’s why I stay in the field of traditional music. I don’t want it to die.”

John Cephas was born in Washington, D.C. in 1930 into a deeply religious family and raised in Bowling Green, Virginia. His first taste of music was gospel, but blues soon became his calling. After learning to play the alternating thumb and fingerpicking guitar style that defines Piedmont blues, John began emulating the records he heard by Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake, Rev. Gary Davis and other early blues artists. Aside from playing blues, John worked early on as a professional gospel singer, carpenter and Atlantic fisherman. By the 1960s, he was starting to make a living from his music.

John first met his future partner Phil Wiggins in 1976 at the Smithsonian National Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. and the two quickly formed a duo. By the early 1980s, the international blues community recognized this marvelous acoustic twosome as the leading exponents of traditional Tidewater blues. While overseas in 1981, they recorded two albums, Living Country Blues and Sweet Bitter Blues, for the German L&R label. Cephas & Wiggins recorded their first domestic album, Dog Days Of August (Flying Fish Records), in 1987 in John’s living room, and it quickly won a Blues Music Award for Best Traditional Blues Album of the Year.

In 1996, Cephas & Wiggins made their Alligator Records debut with Cool Down. They followed up with Homemade, Somebody Told The Truth and Shoulder To Shoulder. Their most recent CD, 2009’s Richmond Blues, was released on the Smithsonian Folkways label.

We're happy to announce a return appearance to the Mountain Stage by one of our long-time favorites, Vic Chesnutt. He'll be joining us solo on Wednesday, April 22 here in Charleston at the Civic Center's Little Theater along with Neko CaseGreg BrownCrooked Fingers and Sonos.

It'll be kind of like this Tiny Desk Concert only if Bob Boilen's office held 600 people.

Actually, Mr. Chesnutt has a long performance history with the Mountain Stage band, and I'm sure they are anxious to work with him again.

Tickets are on-line at Ticketmaster.com, at the Civic Center Box Office (200 Civic Center Drive, Charleston, WV), by phone at 1.800.745.3000 and at Taylor Books here in Charleston.

This will be Chesnutt's seventh appearance on the show since 1990. He's currently getting ready for a tour of France, Italy, the UK and Finland with indie-rockers Elf Power, in support of their collaborative album "Dark Developments."

Vic released a CD on Constellation records, North Star Deserter, in September of 2007 that was produced by filmmaker Jem Cohen. Cohen also featured Vic on the Empires of Tin, now out on DVD. It's a documentary of Cohen's multi-media event at the Vienna International Film Festival 2007 that features Chesnutt performances in the live soundtrack with Silver Mt. ZionGuy Picciotto (Fugazi) and the Quavers. Read more about North Star Deserter on AllMusic.

Later this month he'll perform at a tribute to R.E.M. It was that group's Michael Stipe that first clued our host Larry Groce on to Vic's genius when he released his Stipe-produced debut "Little." Just about all you need to know about Vic and then some can be read here or at one of his fervent fan sites.
