West Virginia Public Radio ... building trust every day.

If you listen to Mountain Stage on a regular basis, then chances are you're an avid listener of Public Radio in general. Like all the programs you hear on your local public radio station, Mountain Stage depends on the contributions from its listeners. Though public radio programming is always and will continue to be a free service, it certainly is not produced without cost. Nationwide, stations are holding their fall fund drive campaigns and as a listener to Mountain Stage, we hope you'll consider a donation if you haven't done so already.

You can contribute to your local station or provide a donation in the name of Mountain Stage through a pledge to WV Public Broadcasting, the network that produces Mountain Stage.

CultureCenter-MySpace
Live audience at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, WV.

We like to think Mountain Stage is unique because you don't hear live performances on the radio much at all. Mountain Stage provides our audience  with a unique performance setting and then we share that experience nationwide through NPR and around the world on the Voice of America. We also provide a comprehensive ARCHIVE of the show for those of you who like to listen on the go, and we upload our segments every week to NPR.org/MountainStage so you can listen to each guest individually.

We even produced a special "Best of" Fund Raising Edition of Mountain Stage that you may hear during this pledge season. We tried to pick a wide variety of artists and styles, music from around the world, some established guests and some emerging artists, all of which presented in the spontaneous and exciting live performance setting that Mountain Stage provides. Click here to see a list of the songs we chose for our fundraiser episode. Music by Neko Case, Martin Sexton, Todd Snider, Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash, Nellie McKay and so much more is included in this two-hour special.

We hear from listeners all the time who appreciate what we do and we always appreciate your feedback. Our listeners and audience, be it live in Charleston or on the radio, are the ones who make our show possible. If you have the financial means to do so and feel that Mountain Stage is an important part of your listening routine then we hope you'll become a member today.

SteveFerguson-2009

Revered guitarist, singer and songwriter Steve Ferguson (b. Nov. 21, 1948), a founding member of famed R&B rockers NRBQ, passed away Wednesday after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 60.

Ferguson appeared on Mountain Stage in 1991 along with his band Brother Stephen & The Humanitarians (see below) and performed with late pianist and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-er Johnnie Johnson, who Ferguson backed on his landmark release "Johnnie B. Bad." He returned to Mountain Stage in 1993 with Mark Horn.

You can still contribute to the Steve Ferguson Fund here to help pay for the medical bills incurred while undergoing treatment for cancer.

"He certainly changed my perspective and approach to music," says Mountain Stage Band guitarist Michael Lipton, whose group The Carpenter Ants worked with Ferguson for many years and often invited him into the studio and on stage. "He was the proverbial triple-threat; not just a guitarist but an amazing singer and songwriter too," Lipton said.

A feature in a Louisville, KY newspaper by Keith S. Clements tells his story here and you can get a glimpse of his timeless sound on his MySpace page. "Steve Ferguson - Who is He?" it says beside his profile picture. The man never got the recognition or notoriety he deserved. Hopefully a lot more people will be turned on to his music now.

A true Ferguson original, "Outer Space Boogie."

Amy Farris on Mountain Stage, July 26, 2009.

Mountain Stage joins the music community in mourning the loss of multi-talented singer/songwriter/fiddler Amy Farris. Her credits include backing everyone from Texas luminaries Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison and Alejandro Escovedo to musical giants Ray Price and Brian Wilson. Farris performed on two Lillith Fair tours in Willis’ band and was most recently a guest on Mountain Stage along with Dave Alvin & the Guilty Women.

Amy's fiddle and vocals were a prominent part of that group. "One of the reasons I put the [Guilty Women] together was to showcase people like Amy who are incredibly talented but don't necessarily get the recognition they should," Dave Alvin said. She was also a highly regarded teacher.

The family is asking for donations, in lieu of flowers, to Hungry For Music Inc, a Maryland-based nonprofit that provides musical instruments to underprivileged children.
